Happy Dancing Santa Ribbon!
From our expert ribbon designer, Laura Foster Nicholson (LFNT) a new best seller: the Dancing Santa Ribbon
I love to draw figures. When I was young, all of my drawings were figurative, and often cartoons. I made a little business as a child of drawing amusing greeting cards and then selling them to my mother's friends when they visited! I think of Santa as lively and quick, as in the Clement Moore poem, and light on his feet. I have been listening recently to a series on public radio, Sunday afternoons, of the story of Santa Klaus, and I think of my little dancing fellow as quite appropriate to the happy generosity of an old European figure.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!...
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
I first sketched these little santas a few years ago, not knowing what they might be destined for. It took Sheila's quick eye to see them as ribbon, when we spent time looking through my myriad drawings together. Translating a drawing into a narrow little ribbon band takes a degree of skill and interpretation: we went through several incarnations of weaving them: it was imperative to capture as much of the detail as possible, down to the little rosy cheeks. Rendering a sketch which begins as something 3" tall, down to a few little threads, is an art in itself, and we worked and worked until we could recapture the ease and joy of the original Santa figures. We added some candy canes for variety, put in metallic threads, took out metallic threads, made him smaller, made him bigger, until we arrived at the happy little guy you find here today.
